About "Couched Symbols"

In 2000, I was asked to respond to a series of conference papers that used psychoanalytic concepts to explore aspects of religions often ignored by sociologists.  "Couched Symbols" is the result.  I like the way that I used Habermas's distinction between descriptive and liberatory theory to separate the neo-objectivist intentions of the papers from their epistemologically justifiable implications.  This is not news to anyone who has made a close reading of Habermas's Knowledge and Human Interests.  It is, however, news to many who attempt to apply psychoanalytic theory naively.

I also like the sudden shift in the last three paragraphs.  I doubt that any sociological journal would touch it.
